St. John’s Priory Local Training Initiative

St John’s Priory Local Training Initiative is a programme funded by WWETB (Waterford/Wexford Educational Training Board) and run by the Waterford Civic Trust. 

Much of the work of the LTI centres around the restoration of St. John’s Priory, a thirteenth century church located in the city.  This provides participants with the opportunity to learn from tutors and each other in a real life restoration/construction environment skills relating to traditional stonewall techniques which they can carry with them to a variety of settings in their lives.  Also, on successful completion of the course, learners have ample opportunities for progression, whether this is to apprenticeships or gainful employment


Major Awards at Levels 4 and 5 on the National Framework of Qualifications.

  • Traditional Stonewall Construction Techniques (Practical and Theoretical)
  • Contemporary Construction Techniques (Kerbs, Flags, Paviours, Woodcraft etc.)
  • Soft Skills (Information Technology Skills, Functional Mathematics, CV Preparation etc.)
  • Experience gained through participation in the restoration project.
